A cross section of a plant stem revealing the remarkable structural complexity and cellular diversity that exists in nature. 'Arrays' of different cell types are present, each cell population performing specific functions in plant growth and survival. The plant is engineered to produce a molecular marker that labels the water-transporting cells of the stem (magenta), surrounded by the stem cell population (tiny cells in white/purple) and the outermost cell layer of the epidermis. Collectively, the cells produce a spectacular natural pattern, just one example of the beautiful cellular tapestry found in nature.
